Only one in every three telecom subscribers in India is anticipated to migrate to 5G by March 2025, according to ratings agency CRISIL, at a time when providers are rushing to build their networks in order to secure spectrum.

According to the Economic Times (ET), CRISIL noted factors such as the expensive cost of 5G devices and the already present 4G network that meets the needs of the majority of customers. According to the ratings agency, many customers may not see the near-term value proposition in moving to 5G.

In India, there would be 300 million 5G users in two years, according to projections made by CRISIL. The base is currently between 20 and 25 million. According to ET, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio are now offering technology-neutral prices to its current 5G customers.

The article quotes Naveen Vaidyanathan, director of CRISIL Ratings, as stating, “Although the percentage of 5G smartphone shipments will steadily grow, the low initial value proposition and high cost of the device over a 4G phone will limit total 5G adoption to 300 million users by fiscal 2025.”

5G adoption to take time, only a third of users

According to ratings agency Crisil, just a third of the nation’s internet customers are projected to transition to 5G by March 2025 due to the high cost of the equipment required to enable the fifth generation of communications technology and the low near-term value proposition.
