YouTube is testing a new subscription option that allows two users to share Premium or Music Premium memberships. According to Money Control, the Google-owned video streaming site tests the strategy with a restricted group of consumers in India, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
The new two-person YouTube Premium subscription costs Rs 219 per month in India. In comparison, the present family plan, which can handle up to five users, costs Rs 299 per month.
The Music Premium duet plan is allegedly available for Rs 149 per month
A spokeswoman for YouTube advised Money Control: We’re experimenting with new ways to provide greater flexibility and value to our YouTube Premium subscribers, including offering a two-person Premium plan option, enabling two individuals to share a subscription at a reduced cost.
YouTube focuses on subscription revenue.
YouTube has been actively working to increase subscription-based revenue, shifting away from its traditional reliance on advertisements. As part of this change, the site has cracked down on ad blockers and boosted Premium subscription prices in multiple areas.
MoneyControl reports that subscription fees in India will rise by 12 to 58% in August 2024, depending on the plan.
