The Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO) Chandrayaan-3 mission is set to launch on Friday, July 14 at 2.35 PM IST from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. Here’s how you can watch the action in real time.

The launch of the LVM-3 (Launch Vehicle Mark – III) carrying the lander, rover, and propulsion module for the Chandrayaan-3 mission will be aired live on ISRO’s website and YouTube channel. The Chandrayaan-3 mission replaces the Chandrayaan-2 mission, which crashed onto the lunar surface in September 2019. Chandrayaan-3, like its predecessor, is made up of a lander and rover configuration that will be propelled to a 100-kilometer lunar orbit by a propulsion module.

The mission’s primary goal is to demonstrate a safe soft landing on the moon for the mission’s Vikram lander. If ISRO succeeds, India will become the fourth country to execute a soft landing on the Moon, joining the United States, the former Soviet Union, and China. Attempts by private space companies led by Israel and Japan to conduct a lunar soft landing have recently failed, as has India’s previous attempt.

Many research payloads are carried by both the lander and the rover. While the propulsion module’s primary duty is to propel the spacecraft into its final lunar orbit once the launch vehicle has completed injection, it also includes a research payload that will begin operations once the lander separates.
