Microsoft introduces subscription based Copilot Pro AI to boost business

After introducing a free AI Copilot for its Bing search engine last year, Microsoft will now offer what it calls Copilot Pro to individuals for $20 monthly.

The subscription will include a text-drafting, number-crunching AI assistant in Microsoft’s most popular applications, such as Word and Excel, as well as access to new tools and AI models like GPT-4 Turbo.

The company also announced that the 300-person minimum requirement for purchasing the enterprise version of the software would be removed, allowing smaller businesses to access the security controls and Microsoft Teams upgrade that come with the $30 per month per user Copilot.

In an interview, Microsoft Corporate Vice President Jared Spataro stated that almost all of its business customers are now expected to sign up. I can’t imagine a commercial organization out there that wouldn’t buy at least one Copilot seat to see what it’s all about, he said.

Alphabet’s Google competes with Microsoft in marketing AI for productivity and cloud software to business customers.

Microsoft’s Copilot Pro is also entering a highly competitive consumer market. OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT and has received funding from Microsoft, announced nearly a year ago a $20-per-month subscription called ChatGPT Plus that provides early access to new features and AI models.

Spataro stated that Copilot Pro will stand out because it is integrated into applications that people use every day.
