YouTube no longer shows video recommendations when logged out

YouTube, the video-sharing platform used by billions of people every day, is displaying a blank page for users who have not logged into their Google accounts. Until now, the YouTube homepage was frequently populated with video recommendations based on the user’s location history.

If you log out of your primary browser, use a browser in which you have not previously logged in to YouTube, or use Incognito mode, the website will display the message “Try searching to get started.” Start watching videos to help us create a feed of videos you’ll enjoy,” as shown in the image below.

Bleeping Computer was the first to notice the change, but it is unclear when and if YouTube did. According to the report, YouTube did not show any recommendations across different computers, and some users who logged in and cleared their search and watch history received the same message.

We also checked to see if YouTube had stopped showing video recommendations in Incognito mode or when logged out, and we can confirm that the home page is now blank and displays only the aforementioned message.

However, this is not the first time YouTube has stopped showing recommendations to users who have not signed in or disabled their watch history. In August of last year, the company implemented the change for some users but quickly reversed its decision due to user backlash.

While the change may be unpopular with YouTube users who do not want Google to know what they are watching, it could be a blessing in disguise for those who did not find the random recommendations useful. Furthermore, this may enable users to create video recommendations locally from scratch.
