Microsoft Xbox app for iOS and Android gets touch controls for select games

The Verge reports that Microsoft is testing touch controls for its Xbox app on iOS and Android devices. The touch control would enable users to remotely control their Xbox consoles and play games on their smartphones and tablets without the need for a wireless controller.

According to the report, Microsoft has begun to implement touch controls in the Xbox app’s beta version for both iOS and Android. The company has not confirmed whether the new feature will be made available to the general public. However, it is expected to be available to all users in the coming months.

According to The Verge, the Xbox smartphone app’s touch controls are identical to those used on Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming service. It provides an on-screen overlay that allows the user to navigate the Xbox user interface, launch games, and begin streaming from the console without the need to connect a controller.
Xbox touch controls are already available on Microsoft’s Surface Duo handset for some video game titles.

Since revealing in a 2021 report that approximately 20% of Xbox Cloud Gaming users only use touch controls, the company has been adding support for touch controls to video games such as Hades, Minecraft Dungeons, and Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

Apple recently announced that it will allow video game streaming apps and services on its App Store. This would enable services like Xbox Cloud Streaming and GeForce Now, which were previously only available on Apple devices through a web browser, to have dedicated iOS and iPadOS apps.
