Threads bouncing back? Meta says X rival now has over 130M Active Users

Meta’s text-based conversation app Threads is steadily growing, with monthly active users now exceeding 130 million, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. This is actually higher than the peak levels Threads experienced shortly after its launch in July 2023.

During Meta’s recent earnings call, Zuckerberg expressed confidence that Threads will maintain its momentum with continued improvements and user growth. He noted that more people are actively using the app now than when it first launched.

In July, Zuckerberg had high hopes for Threads, predicting that it would become Meta’s next billion-user platform, alongside Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. While still in its early stages, Threads appears to be finding its footing.

By comparison, X (formerly known as Twitter) has approximately 550 million monthly active users, according to figures shared by owner Elon Musk in September. Threads has a long way to go, but Meta is making significant investments to help the app scale.

Threads’ usage declined in the months following its launch due to the lack of core features such as keyword search and multiple account support. However, Meta moved quickly to close these gaps and expand the app’s capabilities. This renewed focus appears to be paying off.

Threads’ daily downloads nearly tripled to 28 million in December after adding editing capabilities, voice posts, improved discovery, and other features. Expansion into the EU and increased cross-pollination with Instagram profiles also fueled growth.

Looking ahead, Meta’s CFO stated that the company remains committed to expanding Threads’ community through new features and enhancements in 2024.
