YouTube rolls out AI-enabled editing tools amid a brewing arms race for creators

YouTube demonstrated “Dream Screen” during its Made on YouTube event, an experimental generative AI tool for its Shorts video offering that will build AI-generated video or photo backgrounds in seconds depending on prompts.

Google-owned YouTube demonstrated plans to utilise generative artificial intelligence in its creator tools, as it seeks to gain ground in the expanding creative economy against key rival platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

We want to make it easier for everyone to feel like they can create, and we believe generative AI will make that possible,” said YouTube CEO Neal Mohan at an event in New York on Thursday. “These powerful tools should not be restricted to a select few.” We believe they are appropriate for everyone.

YouTube demoed “Dream Screen” during its Made on YouTube event, an experimental generative AI tool for its Shorts video offering that will build AI-generated video or photo backgrounds in seconds depending on prompts.

YouTube executive Matthew Simari demonstrated the feature in real time. With a simple suggestion, AI creates a film of a dragon soaring over New York City and a dog driving a car, showing Google’s competence in the generative AI sector.

A new AI-powered dubbing tool allows producers to automatically dub their movies into different languages, extending the impact of media beyond the creator’s own country. At Thursday’s event, YouTube also announced a new tool called YouTube Create, which would make it easier for creators to create Shorts.

If you really wander the whole YouTube, you will hear the term creator hundreds of times a day,” Mohan stated at the event’s conclusion during a Q&A session. “When we design products and when I sit in product reviews, I always look at the creators’ point of view.

YouTube’s push to make it easier to create video on its platform comes as the network confronts greater competition from TiTok and Meta’s Instagram. The “Made on YouTube” event hosted by Google’s subsidiary was intended to lay out a long-term strategy for the platform’s engagement with video creators and the music industry.

YouTube welcomed former YouTube executive Robert Kyncl, currently CEO of Warner Music Group, and pop sensation Charlie Puth to the event, where the two discussed AI-generated music.
