Over privacy concerns, Italy’s data-protection authority said in a statement on Friday that it had decided to block the chatbot and investigate whether it complied with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
ChatGPT was also accused by the authority of failing to verify the age of its users.
Since its official launch last November, millions of people have used ChatGPT, which was developed by the US startup OpenAI and is backed by Microsoft. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT was temporarily taken offline due to a bug that caused some of its users to see titles from another user’s chat history.
According to the company, the same bug may have exposed some of its users’ personal and financial information for nine hours. In a statement issued OpenAI apologised for the bug and stated that it had contacted affected users.
The country’s data protection authorities said OpenAI planned to offer remedies to Italian authorities on Thursday to address concerns that resulted in a ban of its ChatGPT chatbot in Italy last week.
The Microsoft Corp.-backed OpenAI was criticised by the Italian agency Garante for failing to verify the users of ChatGPT’s age and for having “no legal basis that justifies the extensive gathering and storage of personal data” in order to “train” the chatbot.
OpenAI responded by blocking access to Italian users.
The agency stated that it has no intention of stifling AI development, but emphasised the importance of adhering to rules aimed at protecting the personal data of Italian and European citizens.
OpenAI pledged to be more transparent about how it handles user data and verifies user ages in a video conference late Wednesday, according to the authority.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was in attendance.
The company stated that it would send Garante a document outlining the steps it would take in response to its requests.
The data authority stated that it would evaluate OpenAI’s proposals.
