Even as Apple Inc celebrates its 25th anniversary in India by broadening its manufacturing and retail presence, the iPhone maker is also increasing its engagement with Indian developers as part of its strategy to drive innovation for its global user base. The App Store payouts to Indian developers have more than tripled since 2018, and the iOS App Design and Development Accelerator in Bengaluru has hosted sessions for over 15,000 developers.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple Inc, stated, “India has such a beautiful culture and incredible energy, and we’re excited to build on our long-standing history — supporting our customers, investing in local communities, and working together to build a better future with innovations that serve humanity.

As part of its silver jubilee celebrations, the company is expanding significantly by opening its first Apple Store locations in Mumbai and Delhi. In addition, the company is expanding its manufacturing infrastructure in India. Apple began producing iPhones in India in 2017, and the company has since collaborated with suppliers to assemble iPhone models and produce an increasing number of components.

Apple’s $50 million Supplier Employee Development Fund, which will be launched in 2022, educates supplier employees on new skill development, rights awareness, and other learning opportunities.

According to experts, although Apple has made progress in boosting engagement with Indian app developers, more can be done. “Apple’s engagement with the Indian developer ecosystem has provided Indian developers with a global client base for their apps, which has generated significant returns for these entrepreneurs,” Sanchit Vir Gogia, Chief Analyst and CEO of Greyhound Research, told business line.

Collaboration with app stores like Apple reduces the effort that these developers must put into billing systems, cybersecurity protocols, marketing, and on the other hand, Apple’s 30% levy remains a sore point for many developers.

Apple announced that it now supports more than 1 million developer jobs in India, as the company plans for a significant expansion in the South Asian market.

This week, Apple will open its first two retail stores in India, with CEO Tim Cook visiting the country to launch the stores and meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss Apple’s growing commitment to India.
