In November 2023, Meta-owned WhatsApp banned over 71 lakh accounts in India. According to India’s monthly report under the IT Rules, 2021 (published on January 1, 2024), WhatsApp banned 71,96,000 accounts between November 1 and 30, of which 19,54,000 were banned proactively before anyone reported them.
WhatsApp uses a +91 phone number to identify Indian users. WhatsApp received 8,841 complaints in the same month, and the company has taken action on six of these reports. WhatsApp also received eight reports from the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC), and all eight reports were followed. The Government of India established the GAC to address concerns raised by Indian citizens on various social media platforms.
In a statement, WhatsApp stated, “This user-safety report contains details of the user complaints received and the corresponding action taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp’s own preventive actions to combat abuse on our platform.”
The platform takes several steps to combat abuse on the platform, including providing tools and resources to help prevent harmful behavior. WhatsApp detection works in three stages: “at registration, during messaging, and in response to negative feedback.” When a user reports an account, a team of analysts reviews it to determine whether it requires strict action, such as permanently banning the account.
Throughout the year, WhatsApp has introduced several security features to improve privacy and user safety. The company currently has features such as end-to-end encryption, mute unknown number, and chat lock, which makes WhatsApp a private and secure cross-platform messaging service.
