WhatsApp’s most recent version includes a new feature that allows you to follow updates from individuals and organisations that are important to you directly within the app. The addition, known as WhatsApp Channels, is a one-way broadcast mechanism that will provide updates under a new tab called Updates, apart from your chats with family, friends, and communities.
The channels will be available in more than 150 countries, including India, over the next two weeks. You can follow channels that are automatically filtered based on your location, or you can search for channels by name or category. You can also view channels depending on the number of followers that are new, most active, and popular.
Some of the best celebrities, sports teams, artists, thought leaders, and organisations from India and around the world will already be available for you to follow on WhatsApp. You can, for example, follow the Indian cricket team, Katrina Kaif, Diljit Dosanjh, Akshay Kumar, Vijay Deverakonda, Neha Kakkar, and many other Indian celebrities. You may also follow Mark Zuckerberg on WhatsApp, where he will offer updates on Facebook and WhatsApp products.
According to the site, WhatsApp Channels are intended to be the most private broadcast option available. Your phone number and profile photo will not be shown to the admin or other channel followers as a channel follower. Similarly, following a channel will not give your phone number to the administrator. It is entirely up to you who you choose to follow. In addition, channel history will be preserved for only 30 days.
Simultaneously, as an admin, you can create a channel using an existing WhatsApp account or a new one. You can also edit your updates for up to 30 days before they are erased from WhatsApp servers.
