WhatsApp releases updates for calling on desktop and mobile

WhatsApp announced on Thursday that it has released updates to improve the integration of calls between desktop and mobile devices. According to the company’s blog post, these updates will begin to roll out in the coming weeks.

WhatsApp declared that it will now support screen sharing with audio, which can be used to watch videos together. So now, when a user shares their screen, they can also share their audio.

The instant messaging service is also introducing a speaker spotlight feature, which will allow participants to quickly see who is speaking, with the speaker automatically highlighted and appearing first on the screen.

Since introducing Calling to WhatsApp in 2015, we’ve continued to improve it with the addition of group calls, video calls, and cross-platform support,” WhatsApp stated in a blog post. “We are also relentlessly focused on audio and video quality, ensuring clearer calls no matter where you are.”

WhatsApp also mentioned that it recently introduced the MLow codec, which improves call reliability. It stated that calls made on mobile devices benefit from improved noise and echo cancellation, making it easier to communicate in noisy environments, and video calls have higher resolution for those with faster connections. It claimed that audio is clearer overall, even if you have poor network connectivity or are using an older device.

WhatsApp enhances video calls for both mobile and desktop apps.

In a blog post, the Meta-owned instant messaging platform explained that the latest update will improve the app’s screen sharing. According to the company, when watching videos with other participants and sharing their screen, a user can also share the audio playing.

WhatsApp also revealed an increase in the number of people who can join video calls simultaneously. While up to 32 mobile users could participate in the calls, desktop app users were previously limited to eight. It is now uniform across all devices, and up to 32 people can participate in a video call, regardless of which platform they join from.
