WhatsApp has introduced a new ‘Secret Code’ feature designed to increase user privacy during sensitive conversations. This is an enhancement to their existing Chat Lock tool, which allows users to password-protect specific chats.

Secret Code allows users to create a separate password from their phone’s lock code in order to access locked chats. If someone else gains access to your phone, this adds an extra layer of security. Furthermore, the Locked Chats folder can now be completely hidden from the main chat list. Accessing locked chats is only possible by entering the secret code into WhatsApp’s search bar.

We’re releasing a secret code for WhatsApp Chat Lock so you can protect your chats with a unique password. You can now set your locked chats to only appear when you type the secret code in the search bar, ensuring that no one accidentally discovers your most private conversations,” said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg about the feature.

The new feature also speeds up the process of locking new chats. Users can now lock any chat by long-pressing it without having to go into settings.

The rollout begins this week and will eventually reach all WhatsApp users worldwide. It’s the latest in a series of privacy-focused updates aimed at assuring users of the Meta-owned app. With chat privacy being a hot topic, cutting-edge tools like Secret Code could help WhatsApp stand out from the crowd.
