Google rolling out Photo Stacks to more Android users

Google Photos is getting a new AI powered feature called Photo Stacks which will help you clean up your messy collection by automatically stacking similar images.

Google has been testing a new feature for its Photos app that uses AI to stack similar images. Called ‘Photo Stacks’, the new feature was initially available to a handful of iOS users, but now it looks like the tech giant is rolling it out to those on Android.

The new AI-powered feature helps reduce the clutter and tidy up your photo collection by automatically grouping them up in stacks and creating a mini album of sorts. Using AI, it tries to identify the best shot and places it on the top of the stack, but users have the option to change the image that appears as the stack cover or turn off the feature entirely.

If your account is eligible for Photo Stacks, the option to enable it will automatically pop up when you launch the Google Photos app. In case can’t or do not want to turn it on by default, the toggle can be found in the app settings which can be accessed by tapping the profile picture icon on the top right of the screen.

While users can create stacks with up to 100 photos, it looks like only images backed up on Google’s cloud servers can be used. Also. you might have to enable Google Photos backup on your account to be eligible for Photo Stacks.

Another useful change is that the Photos app will also categorise screenshots and documents that appear in your gallery in separate albums. While Google has said that Photo Stacks will be coming to more Android users in the coming days, since the update is server-side, you might have to wait a few weeks or even months before it appears on your device.
