Google Suspends Gemini Chatbot’s Ability to Generate Pictures of People

Gemini users this week shared screenshots on social media of historically white-dominated scenes with racially diverse characters that they claim it generated, prompting critics to question whether the company is overcorrecting for the risk of racial bias in its AI model.

Google said Thursday that it is temporarily halting its Gemini artificial intelligence chatbot from generating images of people, a day after apologizing for “inaccuracies” in historical depictions that it was producing.

Gemini users this week shared screenshots on social media of historically white-dominated scenes with racially diverse characters that they claim it generated, prompting critics to question whether the company is overcorrecting for the risk of racial bias in its AI model.

Google stated on the social media site X that “We’re already working to address recent issues with Gemini’s image generation feature. “We’re going to stop creating people’s images while we do this, and we’ll re-release an improved version soon. According to earlier research, AI image generators without filters are more likely to produce lighter-skinned men when asked to generate a person in a variety of scenarios, and they can also reinforce gender and racial stereotypes present in their training data.

On Wednesday, Google announced that it is “working to improve these kinds of depictions immediately” and that it is “aware that Gemini is offering inaccuracies in some historical image generation depictions.” People from all over the world use Gemini, which the company said is “generally a good thing,” but it is “missing the mark.” Gemini can generate a “wide range of people.”

In response to the AP’s request for Gemini to create images of people, the company stated that it is “working to improve” this capability. The chatbot said, “We expect this feature to return soon and will notify you in release updates when it does.”
