Google Messages might soon get a WhatsApp-like edit sent messages feature

Google Messages, the default messaging app on many Android devices, may receive a new WhatsApp-like feature that allows you to edit messages after they have been sent.

Google Messages, a popular messaging app that allows you to send and receive images, videos, and text messages, may soon get a new ‘Edit’ feature similar to WhatsApp. According to code found in a beta version of the app by TheSPAndroid, the app may soon allow users to edit sent messages.

It appears that the tech giant recently added four new flags to the app titled ‘bugle.enable_edit_ui,’ ‘bugle.load_edit_history,’ ‘bugle.process_outgoing_edits,’ and ‘bugle.process_incoming_edits,’ but they appear to be placeholders because enabling them currently does nothing.

While message editing is not a default feature of the RCS standard, the Mountain View-based tech giant has previously added features such as end-to-end encryption, so it won’t be surprising if Google allows you to edit messages sent in the future. The ability to edit sent messages appears to be a work in progress at the moment, with no indication of when it will be available.

Furthermore, it is unclear whether messages sent via Google Messages will have a time limit, as with iMessage and WhatsApp, which allow you to edit messages two minutes and fifteen minutes after you hit the send button, respectively.

It is also unknown whether the receiver will be able to view edit history. iMessage and WhatsApp both allow you to delete sent messages, but there is no indication that Google is developing a similar feature.

Google Messages has recently added several new features, including Photomoji, which allows you to turn any image into stickers and reaction emojis. According to reports, the tech behemoth was also working on integrating satellite-based text messaging into its in-house app, utilizing Garmin’s emergency SOS via satellite service.
